Understanding Your Website Dashboard
Your website dashboard is the control centre for everything your site does. When you first log in it can feel overwhelming, but every section has a clear purpose. This guide maps out the dashboard layout, explains what each area does, and helps you find the features you need quickly.
1. Logging In to the Dashboard
Access your website's admin dashboard by navigating to your login URL. This is typically one of:
- yourdomain.com/admin
- yourdomain.com/wp-admin (WordPress)
- yourdomain.com/login
Your Isuso Works team will provide the exact login URL when they deliver your website. Enter your username (or email) and password, and click Sign In. If you have two-factor authentication enabled, you will be prompted for a code after entering your password.
Bookmark Your Login URL
Save the login URL to your browser bookmarks. This avoids searching for it every time. For added security, do not save your password in your browser on a shared computer.
2. Dashboard Layout Overview
Most website dashboards share the same structural layout:
| Area | Location | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Top Bar / Toolbar | Fixed at the top | Quick access: view your live site, add new content, check notifications, manage your user profile |
| Sidebar / Navigation | Left side | Main navigation menu: Pages, Posts, Media, Users, Settings, and installed features like Ecommerce |
| Main Content Area | Centre/right | The working area: the Home screen overview, or whichever section you have navigated to |
| Screen Options | Top right toggle | Show/hide columns and sections on certain pages to reduce clutter |
3. The Home / Overview Screen
The first screen you see after logging in is the dashboard home. It typically contains summary widgets:
- Activity / Recent Activity: Shows recently published content, pending comments, and recent orders (for stores). A useful at-a-glance summary of what has changed.
- Quick Draft: Write a short note or blog post draft without navigating away from the home screen.
- Site Health / Status: Alerts you to security or performance issues that need attention. Pay attention to any red or orange warnings here.
- Updates Available: Shows pending plugin, theme, or platform updates. Keep these updated regularly.
4. Key Sidebar Sections Explained
Pages
Manage all the static pages on your website: Home, About, Services, Contact, and any other permanent pages. Add new pages, edit existing ones, or change their status (published, draft, private).
Posts / Blog
Manage blog articles or news updates. Posts are displayed in reverse-chronological order on your blog page. You can also manage Categories and Tags here to organize your content.
Media
Your media library contains all uploaded images, videos, and documents. Upload new files, search for existing ones, and view or edit file details such as alt text and title.
Products / E-commerce
Appears if your website has an online store. Manage products, product categories, orders, customers, coupons, and reports. See the E-commerce section of the Knowledge Base for detailed guides.
Appearance / Design
Control visual aspects of your website: the active theme, header and footer customization, navigation menus, and widget areas.
Users
Manage team member and customer accounts. Add, edit, or remove users and change their roles. See our Creating User Accounts guide for full instructions.
Settings
Site-wide configuration: general information, reading settings (which page is the homepage), discussion (comment settings), permalinks (URL structure), and installed feature settings. Most settings only need to be configured once.
5. Understanding Notifications and Alerts
Pay attention to these dashboard notifications:
- Update notifications (orange badge on Updates in the sidebar): Available updates for your platform, plugins, or themes. Update regularly to stay secure.
- Comment moderation (badge on Comments): New comments awaiting approval. Review and approve or delete them promptly.
- New order notifications (for stores): Each new order appears in the sidebar badge and is emailed to your admin address.
- Security alerts: If your platform detects suspicious activity or a failed login attempt from an unusual location, it will display a notice on the dashboard home screen.
Check the Dashboard Weekly
Make it a habit to log in and review the dashboard at least once a week even if you have not made any changes. This lets you catch pending updates, unanswered form submissions, or security warnings before they become problems.
6. Common Quick Actions
Here is a reference for the most common tasks and where to find them:
| Task | Where to Find It |
|---|---|
| Edit the homepage text | Pages > All Pages > click Home > Edit |
| Publish a new blog post | Posts > Add New |
| Upload a new image | Media > Add New |
| View new orders | WooCommerce / Store > Orders |
| Update the contact email | Settings > General > Admin Email |
